Re    " In practice, some programs shop some of import files here. Just it should be condom to remove some old files" Which is precisely why I asked " How would I know? " [see examples I offered]

AFAIK %Temp% merely takes me to entire Temp folder via CMD;    Simply reply to a higher place leads one to believe information technology

discriminates amongst important and trash-able Temp contents.

Which is Truthful??

I'1000 becoming increasingly cynical every mean solar day; It'south but so damn hard keeping upwards!

Discovered 1.8GB accumulated in Temp* folder.

My questions:
one) Can I safely Delete everything in this folder*?
2) If not, how would I discriminate which can be safely Deleted?

Uncertainty generated by numerous folders/files named with terms similar: MSI, Install, Installation, Silverlight, java & Update logs , plus something identified equally AppleMedia .

*Temp = "C:\Users\(my proper noun)\AppData\Local\Temp

Yes, they tin, and should be, deleted periodically.

The temp binder provides workspace for programs. Programs can create temporary files there for their own temporary use. Each program should delete all its temporary files when it closes, just for various reasons information technology doesn't e'er happen (for example, if the program crashes, information technology never gets to practice this). That'south why it'due south a skillful idea to periodically clean out anything left there.

As well note that there are some program installations which work in 2 steps. The get-go step concludes past writing temporary files and rebooting. The 2nd step starts automatically after rebooting and needs to find those files at that place (and so deletes them when it's washed).

Other than doing it automatically when rebooting (that would interfere with installations like the kind I described), it's ever safe to delete the contents of the temp folder. Considering it's safe to delete any temp files that aren't open and in use by an application, and since Windows won't let you delete open files, information technology's safe to (try to) delete them at any time. If whatsoever neglect to delete because they're open, they'll either be deleted automatically when the app using them closes, or you'll get them the next time you delete manually.

Some people may propose that you reboot before deleting anything, but that'due south not necessary, for the reason described higher up (on the other mitt, information technology doesn't hurt to do it).
